Bacteriol. 90:262-265. 1965.-A new specific glycolipid in extracts prepared from strains designated Mycobacterium marinum and M. balnei has been demonstrated by use of the techniques of column chromatography and infrared spectroscopy. Since there is now agreement among many workers that M. marinum and M. balnei are identical, the demonstration of the same specific glycolipid in both species is not surprising. This substance, which we have designated mycoside G, is chemically similar to mycosides A and B, and apparently differs only in the sugar moiety. In addition, the lipids extracted from these cultures contain phthiocerol dimycocerosate, a wax component found also in M. tuberculosis and M. bovis.

Skin infection with Mycobacterium marinum from a tropical fish tank.
Opportunist acid-fast bacilli sometimes cause progressive indolent infections of the skin, producing nodules, granulomatous lesions, abscesses, or ulcers. Some of these mycobacteria prefer temperatures lower than 370C for growth, and minor trauma or devitalized tissue probably aid their entry and establishment. One such organism, Mycobacterium marinum (balnei), was identified as the cause of ep...
متن کاملA novel phenolic glycolipid from Mycobacterium leprae possibly involved in immunogenicity and pathogenicity.
A phenolic glycolipid was obtained in high amounts (2% of dry weight) from Mycobacterium leprae isolated from infected armadillo liver. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy showed that it is closely related to "mycoside A" from Mycobacterium kansasii and is therefore a glycosylphenolic phthiocerol diester. The crucial difference between the two products is in the composition of ...

Cord formation in a clinical isolate of Mycobacterium marinum.
Cord formation is a characteristic property of the cultured Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex species. We describe a case of Mycobacterium marinum demonstrating robust cord formation. Nontuberculous mycobacteria can form true cords in broth culture but do so rarely, despite the fact that many species contain the cell wall glycolipid that mediates cord formation.
